I’m back after a lovely week off, and thanks to Derek for manning the fort this last week writing to us all about “Boundaries” – interesting stuff.
We return to the 1st letter of John which hopefully we will finish this week, and today’s passage is 1 John Chapter 4 verses 7 to 16a, and is mostly an overlap from when I was last on over a week ago, so we can get back to the flow of the argument.
We are reminded that God is love (v.8), that is part of His definition, His essential character; and that this love is supremely demonstrated by Him sending His one and only Son into the world to be a sacrifice for our sins (v.10), and to give us life (v.9).
And John writes of this slightly “hard to grasp” connection between God’s love and God’s life in us, I want to say it is a bit like trying to pick up jelly! And we have a part to play in this, both by loving one another (v.12), but also in our stated faith, acknowledging that Jesus is the Son of God (v.15).
But although our response of loving one another and our words of faith may be seen and heard, the key to all of this is something that can’t be seen, a 2-way relationship which John mentions twice in this passage (vs.13 & 15), that we live in God and He lives in us, by His Spirit.
And today’s passage finishes (v.16a) with a lovely thought to take into today, or any day,’And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.’ (my emphasis)
