Our Bible reading today is Luke Chapter 22 verses 7 to 23, ‘The Man with the jar’, although it is really about Jesus’ final Passover meal, what it meant to Him then, and what it signifies to us now.
Sinclair Ferguson, our devotional writer puts it like this,’The significance of the annual Passover celebration was inscribed on the soul of our Lord Jesus. He had shared in it for as long as he could remember, first in Nazareth and then in Jerusalem. … Even more so, his own life and ministry were defined by it; for he was the “Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John Ch.1 v.29).Every previous Passover had pointed to this Passover, like a shadow of the reality. They all pointed to the cross, to the real and final exodus that would come through the shed blood of the Lamb of God, sacrificed for the sins of the world (John Ch.1 v.29).’
And so he asks us to reflect,’Do you long for the Lord’s Supper? Why, or why not? Whenever you receive the Lord’s Supper, remember: “Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed. Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven … of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth” (1 Corinthians Ch.5 vs.7-8).’
