Our Bible passage today is Exodus Chapter 12 verses 1 to 30. This is one of the most important passages in the whole of the Old Testament, as the details of the Passover are outlined. Do read or listen to it all through first before looking at my notes.
We break off from the plagues as the Lord takes time to explain to Moses and Aaron what is about to happen next. However, the account of what is actually going to happen, the plague of the first born, is fairly brief (vs.12-13), and much more time is spent explaining the preparations for the Festival, how to celebrate the Festival right then, but almost more importantly how this event was to be commemorated for the generations to come. This was a festival that would celebrate how the Lord rescued or saved His people from slavery, from which the journey to the Promised Land would begin.
And so from v.21 onwards Moses explains it all to the Israelite elders, who would then pass it on to their families, which led to worship and obedience (v.28).And in vs.29-30 God’s judgement is meted out, and there is much wailing.
And of course it was at a Passover meal that the Lord Jesus had His last supper with His friends, which gives us many links between God’s rescue mission in the Book of Exodus to Christ’s rescue mission on the Cross. More of that tomorrow…
