Good morning everybody, it is Monday!
Here is another “I am” saying. I suggest we read John Chapter 8 verses 12-30, but obviously the key verse is v.12.
Jesus says, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’
Light is a big symbol throughout the Scriptures, and is often contrasted with darkness. It is a symbol for some deeper ideas of good vs. evil, and life vs. death. This comes out in the discussion which Jesus has with the Jews, both before and after our key verse.
Light is mentioned right at the beginning of the whole story where God’s first recorded words are, ‘Let there be light’ (Genesis Chapter 1 verse 3), because light is a brilliant first thing to have. And the bringing of light is a theme throughout Jesus’ ministry and especially in John’s Gospel. Flip back if you have time to John Chapter 1 vs.1-9, words which we often hear read at Christmas time, and seem to echo the beginning of Genesis, telling us that the NEW creation is now beginning to happen, and that God is with us in human form.
And when Jesus says that He is the light of the world, there seems to be an element there of guidance, that when we follow Jesus He leads us down the right paths, which will be good for us, and enable us to flourish.I am reminded of the famous verse in the Psalms, ‘Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path’ (Psalm 119 verse 105). Jesus is the living word who speaks to us and longs to guide us today.
Let us pray that Jesus indeed may be a light to us and for us today, as we seek to follow Him, and He gives us life.
Praying through our extended church address list, we remember today those who came regularly to Here 4 You when it was open, who haven’t been mentioned previously,
