Daily email Number 327 – from the Vicar

Our passage today is 1 John Chapter 3 verses 11-24.
Here is an extended portion of teaching about the absolute need to love our brothers and sisters, meaning others within the Christian fellowship, and builds on what we have seen already in Ch.2 vs.9-11.  And of course it builds on the teaching of the Lord Jesus Himself, which would have been heard in person by John himself and as recorded in his Gospel (Ch.13 vs.34-35Ch.15 vs.12-14).
And that love is both an attitude (so not like the attitude of Cain), but also in practical action (v.17), so it isn’t just empty words.
But all of this is a result or response to the sacrificial love of Jesus to us (v.16).I remember a friend of mine speaking from this passage many years ago, and he very helpfully pointed out a similarity in reference, which stuck in my statistical mind.He said John’s Gospel Chapter 3 verse 16 is one of the most famous quotations in the whole of Bible, ‘God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…’But 1 John Chapter 3 verse 16 is also a really helpful verse to have in our memory, ‘This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.  And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.’  And the challenge John is giving to his first readers, and by extension ourselves, is that the way we love our fellow Christians is a key sign on whether we have really responded to the love of Jesus for ourselves, and whether we really belong to Him.Something to ponder on today and into the future…

In our daily prayers, we are back to the beginning of our list again so let us pray today for,- Colin & Penny, remembering too their daughter Storm who is currently in hospital- Martin & Lucie
