Daily email Number 180 – from the Vicar

It is Saturday, the start of the weekend, and we have reached our maximum, ONE HUNDRED and EIGHTYYYYYY!(It’s a darts joke, for those who don’t know!)
As we continue looking at the “I am” sayings, our passage today is John Chapter 14 verses 1-14.
The key verse is v.6, where Jesus says, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.’
We are probably in the Upper Room and Jesus’ last supper with His disciples, and He has just announced that He is leaving them, and they can’t follow, well not straightaway anyway.  And then Jesus proceeds to calm their hearts and minds and starts talking about His Father’s house with its many rooms.  He is talking about heaven. John Ch.14 vs.1-6 is one of the set Bible passages for the Anglican funeral service, and probably the one that is used most often, for this very reason.
I think we often concentrate on the “I am the way” bit, more than the other 2, and that is probably because Jesus’ words are answering a question from Thomas, ‘Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?’  It is through Jesus, and faith in Him, that we get to His Father’s house, to heaven. But all 3 are important, Jesus always speaks the truth and He embodies The Truth, He is entirely trustworthy, and He brings Life to all who come to Him.
Note there is an exclusiveness here, Jesus says I am THE way, THE truth, and THE life, rather than A way…, ie He is not one of many alternatives.  And this is shown clearly by the next sentence, ‘No one comes to the Father except through me.’  He is the only way, which in our multi-faith world is usually not a popular concept, but that would have been equally true back in Jesus’ time.
The rather twee little children’s chorus which I brought to COTH makes this point very clearly. ‘I am the way, the truth and the life, that’s what Jesus said. Without the way, there is no going, without the truth, there is no knowing, without the life, there is no living, I am the way, the truth and the life, that’s what Jesus said.’
Let us have Jesus at the centre of all we do today.
From our church address list, let us pray today for,- Lynn & Paul- Jason, Corette, Pieter and Zarah
