Welcome to Friday. A bit later than usual as I’ve been out for a morning run.
Here is another “I am” saying from John’s Gospel.I suggest you read John Chapter 11 verses 17-27, but if you have time and want the wider context then the whole section is really verses 1 to 44.
The key verses are 25 & 26 where Jesus says, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.’
What does Jesus mean by this?Jesus is saying that He can bring new life to those who are dead, and this works at different levels. Those who are dead spiritually because of our sin can be made alive in Christ NOW as they turn to Him and repent and believe. St Paul summarises this in his letter to the Ephesians Chapter 2 verses 1-4.
But when our earthly bodies die, which happens to everybody unless Jesus physically returns before that point, our soul and spirit live on if we believe in Christ. And when Jesus does return our soul/spirit will be reunited with our heavenly resurrected body (see 1 Corinthians Chapter 15), so as the end of the verse says, in reality we will never die because we will be with Christ in the new creation for eternity.
Jesus says these words after his good friend Lazarus has died, which Jesus seems to have allowed and not healed him; because He wanted the opportunity to show a greater sign. And this He does by raising Lazarus from the dead (vs.43-44), thus proving that his words earlier are true, He is the resurrection and the life. And of course, this is all a foretaste of His own resurrection which will happen shortly afterwards.
So some deeper theology today, hope it has been helpful.
