Daily email from the Vicar Number 52

We’ve reached the weekend and there is German football on the telly (as well as a “sort of” Eurovision song contest)!
Our Bible passage today is Genesis Chapter 18 verses 1 to 15.
3 mysterious visitors appear to Abraham and Sarah.  Some Christian commentators try and see the Trinity here, but the text seems to lean more to the Lord, or should I say the Lord Jesus, and 2 angelic companions.
We have an interesting insight into the generous hospitality of the time (verses 3 to 8) – I sometimes wonder how long the visitors had to wait as bread is baked (v.6) as well as a roast dinner (v.7)!
No new promises are revealed here, but the promise of a son to Sarah (as in yesterday’s passage) is now given to her directly (verses 10 to 15) so she has the opportunity to participate in belief and faith herself.
And the wonderful rhetorical question in verse 14, ‘Is anything too hard for the Lord?’ reminds me of what the angel said to Mary when telling her that both she and her relative Elizabeth would have babies in very different circumstances, ‘For nothing is impossible with God.’ (Luke Chapter 1 verse 37).
And that leads me to think about how many special people in the Lord’s plan came after periods of infertility, Sarah and Isaac, Rachel and Joseph, Hannah and Samuel, Elizabeth and John.  His timing is always best.
We pray for safety and good sense to be evident in the country over this weekend.
And in our own church address list, we pray for,
– Tina
– Derek & Joanna
Just a reminder for the details of the invitation to our service tomorrow morning at 11am, hope to see most of you there on screen.
